Clothes that hold

A few weeks ago I ordered a couple of winter pieces online. One of them, a structured denim jacket, arrived a size too small in the waist. Not unwearable. Just not right.

I could have kept it. But I don't like to compromise on fit, which has taken a lot of discipline over the years. So I set it aside and waited.

A friend was visiting from out of town. She was in the middle of one of those weeks; career at the forefront, the kind of pivotal moment where things are landing that you've been quietly working toward for the last 10 years of your life. She tried on the jacket. It fit her perfectly. She wore it every day she was here.

A week after she flew home, she sent me a message.

That jacket forever represents what Sydney was. That moment. Feeling. I get to have that every time I wear it. It's unlike any anchor I've had before. Wild.

I've been thinking about that message since.

Lately it feels like things are converging; experiences, encounters, conversations that are arriving with a sense of inevitability, like they were always going to find me here. Ideas I've been holding separately for years that are suddenly feeding the same thing. Roots underground, nourishing what's rising above. And somewhere in all of it, a quiet impulse to return to formed narratives and demystify what's been accepted as truth.

Her message landed right when it was needed, a mirror for the launch and the reason why I made the shirt.

A garment as anchor, a vessel to hold memory. A piece of clothing that holds a moment in time; the city, the feeling, the version of yourself that showed up in it, and gives it back to you every time you put it on.

I don't think clothes are a shallow pursuit when they're approached with any real attention. Most of them are; chosen in a hurry, worn without much thought, discarded before they've had time to become anything. But clothes chosen with genuine discernment, that fit the body they're actually living in, that carry something of who you are and translate an outward projection of your internal world and how you want to be seen; those are a different thing entirely.

Capsule 01 was made to hold something. Whether it does, that part isn't mine to decide. It belongs to whoever wears it, and whatever they're moving through when they do.
